CAC Implements Actions to Eradicate Child Labor

Publicado el 25/06/2019

The Consorcio Azucarero Central (CAC), in its interest to eradicate child labor in the sugarcane zone, implements actions through internal and external communication campaigns on this issue.

The International Program for the Eradication of Child Labor of the International Labor Organization (OIT) defines child labor “as dangerous and detrimental to the physical, mental or moral well-being of the child and requires them to combine study with heavy work that involves them long time”.

Externally, it has been taking steps on the matter, by signing a responsible grazing agreement with the Municipal District Boards of that area.

The responsible grazing agreement establishes that only people over 18 years of age can herd animals on the streets and lanes of CAC’s cane farm, excluding minors because they should be studying.

Likewise, CAC, through its social arm, the Fundación Central Barahona (FCB), helps to prevent school dropouts by promoting the education of girls and boys aged 1 to 5 years, with 9 initial education schools. These are in Batey (small village) 9, Batey 6, Batey 8, Batey 5, Batey Isabela, Palo Alto, Villa Central, as well as support for the Centro Tecnológico de Capacitación Centro Espacio Esperanza in the latter community. In these schools, children receive uniforms, books, as well as snacks and gifts at the end of each school year

With all these actions, CAC, faithfully complies with the provisions of the Labor Code of the Dominican Republic, as well as the agreements signed and ratified with the International Labor Organization (OIT).
